Health Insurance Policy

Health insurance for domestic students is optional. Health insurance for international students is not optional.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS

Overview

  • CGU insurance is optional for domestic students.
  • Beginning with the Fall 2014 semester, domestic students interested in participating in The Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan enroll directly with the insurance provider, Ascension Collegiate Solutions. This may be done online using a major credit card at Ascension Collegiate Solutions.
  • The deadline to enroll for coverage online are:
    • Fall: 09/29/15
    • Spring/Summer: 02/04/16
    • Summer: 06/13/16

Dates of Coverage

Annual: 08/29/15 – 08/30/16
Fall: 08/29/15 – 01/04/16
Spring/Summer: 01/04/16 – 08/30/16
Summer: 05/13/16 – 08/30/16

  • Students on a medical leave of absence who are enrolled in the plan will continue to remain on the plan for that semester. If you will be on a leave of absence and wish not to be covered during that semester, you must notify Ascension directly.
  • The SHIP plan brochure, which includes current prices and coverage information, can be found here.
  • Read through the brochure and become familiar with the plan information before you sign up. Certain restrictions apply as well as participation with the Claremont University Consortium's Student Health Services.

Dependent Coverage

  • You can only insure dependents in The Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan if you are also insured through The Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan.
  • Dependent rates are paid directly to the insurance company at the rates listed on Ascension’s website. Dependents may be added only up until the enrollment deadline listed in the brochure or on the dependent enrollment form.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Overview

International Students (F-1 visa):

Beginning with the Fall 2014 semester, all international students (F-1 visa only) are required to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered through the Claremont University Consortium.

Exceptions to this requirement are considered as follows:

  • Students under third party government sponsorship, such as those sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM), are exempt from this requirement.
  • Doctoral level students who have completed their coursework and who are enrolled in doctoral study and have extenuating circumstances.

If you meet either of these conditions, you may file a Petition for the entire academic year or by semester to request a waiver from the insurance requirement. Petitions should be accompanied by evidence of adequate and valid medical insurance coverage. Petitions must be received 20 days before the start of the period of coverage.

Petitions must be presented for review by the deadline date to the International Students and Scholars Services Office in person at McManus 143 or via email to: international@cgu.edu using “SHIP-Exemption” in the subject line.
