INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Overview

International Students (F-1 visa):

All international students (F-1 visa only) are required to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) offered through the Claremont University Consortium.  CGU will automatically enroll its international students (F-1 visa only) into the health insurance plan, unless a student qualifies for an exemption.

Exemptions to this requirement are considered as follows:

  • Students under third party government sponsorship, such as those sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM), are exempt from this requirement. In order to be exempted from the insurance requirement, a student must have an up-to-date Financial Guarantee letter on file with CGU's Third Party Coordinator.
  • Students with sponsorship from their employer. In order to be exempted from the insurance requirement, a student must have an up-to-date Financial Guarantee letter on file with CGU's Third Party Coordinator.
  • Students who will be graduating in the Spring semester can request an exemption for Summer. In order to be exempted from the insurance requirement a student must have an approved Intent to Graduate form on file with the Registrar's Office.
  • Active students residing outside the United States. If at any point during the academic year (fall, spring or summer semesters) a student is active but living outside the U.S. an exemption can be requested. In some instances, additional documentation may be requested of the student.
  • Other extenuating circumstances.

If you meet any of these conditions, you must file a Petition for the entire academic year or by semester to request a waiver from the insurance requirement. Petitions should be accompanied by evidence of adequate and valid medical insurance coverage.

Petitions must be submitted by the established deadline date to the Dean of Students office in person at Harper Hall East or via email to: deanofstudents@cgu.edu using "SHIP-Exemption" in the subject line.
